BARN SWALLOW
In 2002, CRYSTAL GARDENS opened the BARN SWALLOW. Owner, Wendell built this structure with the help of his then landscape crew and family members. He cut the tall red pines from the property early the year before and had them cut into beams at a local sawmill. And viola! a good old-fashioned barn. Not only does he enjoy plants—he loves to collect 'stuff'. And what better way to display the all of it than in this unique setting.
Daughter #2 Kelly heads up the operation and has assembled a delightful combination of art, antiques, gift ideas and classic to vintage clothing. Wendell also displays his original Michigan stone creations, lamps and jewelry among them. He has been a rock hound for a least 25 years, seeking the coveted PETOSKEY STONE….here's your chance to own some too! He plans to have an onsite rock shop during July and August, if you have your own 'PETS', bring them on in for a little shine or he has literally thousands to pick from. If you would like a custom lamp…just let him know what you have in mind. They are all different and one of a kind, true treasures. His motto: "Rocks are Forever".
It is a great place just to come and look around, so much to see, inside and out. The BARN SWALLOW also showcases a large HERB GARDEN and if that wasn't enough W.P. (Wendell Putney) added a NATURE EXHIBIT. He wanted to share all the things he loves so much living here in northern Michigan. Butterflies, birds and bees. Fish, turtles, and snakes. We've even added a native plant selection to coincide with this garden. What better way to coax nature into your back yard than planting the things they like most!
the 'BIRD'! Oh yah, he's still here. He has a new girlfriend, her name is 'Belles', she is an all white bird. Her parents are both new at the nature exhibit this year along with her sister, 'Peachie'. All four are unusual and a must to see---bring your camera. We will be expecting babies sometime in July! Tune in for more updates as the season continues.
